We’re extremely excited about the forthcoming visit of the brilliant Ockham’s Razor with a very special triple bill of works – ‘Arc’, ‘Every Action…’ and ‘Memento Mori’. Ockham’s Razor’s stunning brand of aerial theatre combines amazing feats of balance and strength, storytelling and humour – a sort of stripped-back version of Cirque du Soleil with the performers so close that you can almost touch them. Here’s more about each piece with accompanying press responses:
‘Arc’ takes place on an aluminium aerial raft rigged 3.5 metres off the ground. Due to the way it is rigged the structure seems to float in the air, it also up-ends dramatically half way through the performance.
“their catches and holds become perilously expressive, and their real vulnerability and strength becomes part of the story.” The Independent
“It’s like the cliffhanger ending of The Italian Job, but rescripted for extra existential impact by Beckett.” The Daily Telegraph
“The moves are physically thrilling, the accompanying fluctuations of mood and relationships succinctly developed.” The Sunday Times
Four strangers come together before twenty-five metres of rope looped over two pulleys. If someone pulls on one side of the rope, the rope on the other side is affected. The characters are drawn together as they climb and wind around each other, hoist each other into the air and send each other plummeting to the ground. As they explore this elevated set of scales they discover the meaning of altruism, antagonism and reliance. ‘Every Action…’ is at once playful and arresting and looks at a world where everything you do will affect someone, somewhere.
“a light hearted classic of constant, feel-good invention” The Times
“ the delightfully light-hearted Every Action… really raises the roof. Great entertainment ” The Stage
An intimate duet, performed on a simple suspended metal frame. It is based on Holbein’s woodcuts of “The Dance of Death”, where death is represented as a skeleton, which dances each of us to our grave. The piece explores this personification of death. ‘Memento Mori’ won the Jeunes Talents Cirque award when premiered at Theatre de la Cite Internationale, Paris, 2004.
“A beautiful duet, which will be applauded for a long time to come.” Le Figaro
“Memento Mori, is a ravishingly graceful pas de deux for a man and a woman” The Daily Telegraph
“...full of drama and has a deliciously eerie feel” The Stage
